New and improved technology in stretch hood packaging offering significant cost reduction for end-users

Lachenmeier Stretch Hood technology suitable for new stretch hood film based on Nexxstar™ film resins provided by ExxonMobil Chemical

Sønderborg, January 10, 2004 - Lachenmeier has developed a new generation of stretch hood machines which presents considerable advantages for end-users. An innovative stretch technology offering significant cost reduction, improved optical properties and outstanding load stability is cementing stretch hood as the number one choice of pallet wrapping method for a wide range of industries.

The development of the new stretch hood technology is a culmination of a co-operation between Lachenmeier and ExxonMobil Chemical. Comprehensive tests with stretch hood film based on ExxonMobil Chemical technology helped Lachenmeier decide which packaging criteria to focus on when stretch hooding and specify which stretch parameters to use for the different industries.

Per Lachenmeier, Managing Director at Lachenmeier A/S, said: “This new stretch technology combined with the new stretch hood film fills a gap in the end-of-line pallet packaging industry. Results prove that a wide range of products will benefit from this technology, not only bagged products like cement or chemicals, but also bricks, appliances, food, beverages and other bottled goods, which were initially too instable for this wrapping method”.

The lower operating costs can be achieved by down gauging the film thickness and at the same time obtaining the optimum load stability. The Lachenmeier stretch units are developed to handle the thinner film without overstretching it and without destroying the holding forces of the film.

One of the main advantages of the new stretch hood machine is the heavy duty stretch units which are based on hydraulic stretching. Each gripper has a stretch force exceeding more than 1 ton which is considerably more than the stretch force of electrical stretch units seen on other stretch hood machines in the market.

The new stretch units provide a controlled application of the stretch hood film as every step of the application procedure is fully controllable from stretching the film to the application over the load and to releasing the film under the pallet. A film hood with a smaller circumference than the load is wound up on four stretch units and stretched to a size matching the exact outer circumference of the load. Thanks to the Lachenmeier top stretch film unwinding system (patent pending EP 1.184.281), by means of which a controlled amount of film is unwound during stretching, thin and fragile film, especially on the corners of the product, are avoided. Furthermore, the formation of thin spots on the corners after application does not occur due to the unwinding of the film.

During application of the film hood over the product, the film does not just slide off the stretch units, but the winding off is controlled in a gentle way leading to improved clarity and improved marketability/branding of the wrapped product.

Finally, the Lachenmeier film snapback system, where the film hood is released from the stretch units in a controlled manner, ensures a reliable hold between load and pallet which in turn leads to less product damage during transport and thus less return products.

Lachenmeier is one of the leading manufacturers of end-of-line packaging machinery and has been on the market since 1969. Always focusing on customer requirements, Lachenmeier has been the front runner for years, and milestones such as the introduction of the shrink frame in 1971 as a replacement of the energy-heavy shrink ovens, the introduction of the combined shrink machine in 1982, where hood application and shrinking take place in one unit, and finally the introduction of the fully automatic stretch hood machine in 1988, which has proven to be the most desirable wrapping method of today, speak for Lachenmeier’s innovative technology. The latest stretch hood machine is the 4th generation since the introduction back in 1988. To find out more about Lachenmeier visit www.lachenmeier.com.
