Stretch Hood Plant Clears PET Bottle Neck
Through put increase at PET and PP bottle production facility in Chalgrove, Oxon
Owens Illinois Plastics, a member of the Owens Illinois Plastics Group, has recently undertaken a major investment to increase through put at its PET & PP bottle production facility in Chalgrove, Oxon.
As part of this investment Owens Illinois Plastics has commissioned a highly efficient stretch hood system from Lachenmeier.
Owens Illinois Plastics supplies high volumes of bottles and containers to many of the major pharmaceutical companies in the UK, and therefor required a fully automatic wrapping system capable of wrapping 85 pallets per hour for 24 hours, 7 days a week and for 51 weeks a year.
"We recognised that the wrapping plant was key to achieving a faster operation and a very high standard of pack presentation, coupled with a totally stable load", said Plant Manager Spencer Page.
The Lachenmeier stretch hood system receives packs that have been manually palletised and automatically gauges the height of each load prior to entering the plant. One of two films are selected (up to 4 films are possible) and a hood of the correct length is manufactured and applied over the load and under the pallet.
The stretch hood system guarantees a dust proof, tamper evident, consolidated load, overcoming the problems that can occur with conventional stretch wrapping.
The PET and PP bottle industry has from time to time experienced pallet loads which, when inadvertently wrapped too tightly, causes the packs to distort damaging the trays and the bottles stacked within.
"Given the heavy demands we place on any plant in an operation like ours, I am always sceptical about the engineering quality of new equipment.
